VGTI-FL Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)
Deadline for Summer 2013 Program: Extended to April 19, 2013
VGTI-FL offers a Summer Undergraduate Fellowship Program to qualified undergraduate students interested in a career in the life sciences and in particular in the field of Immunology. The program will run from June 10th to August 2nd, 2013.
Our fellowship program is designed to give qualified undergraduate students who have graduated from regional Florida high schools the opportunity to work directly with Principal Investigators and the scientific staff at VGTI-FL. The program will pair students with a VGTI-FL scientific mentor and will provide an environment to promote educational and research activities for the fellows. The fellows will be expected to conduct a research project during the summer for an eight-week period and they will be required to present the results of their project in a public forum at the conclusion of their fellowship.
VGTI-FL Mission
VGTI Florida is a leading immunological research institute that is on an urgent mission to transform scientific discoveries into novel treatments and cures for infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, cancer, and illnesses that disproportionately affect our aging population. VGTI Florida is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization located in the Tradition Center of Innovation in Port St. Lucie, Florida. For more information, visit www.VGTIFL.org
Eligibility
The program is open to students currently enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program who have completed at least the equivalent of two years of college and are currently pursuing a four-year degree.
All applicants must be in good academic standing as evidenced by the submission of a current official transcript.
All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
Applicants that are not US citizens must have a current visa with authorization to receive compensation. All other applicants must possess a valid social security number.
Scope of fellowship
Each fellow will be assigned a faculty mentor to serve as the coordinator of research activities of the fellow during their involvement in the program. A project will be defined by the faculty mentor in conjunction with the fellow and a clearly defined plan of action will be developed for the research activities of the fellow. Fellows are not required to provide any direct services for VGTI-FL in return for their fellowship. All data generated by the fellow during their stay at VGTI-FL will belong to the faculty sponsor and any publications that may result from that data will include the appropriate acknowledgments of the work contributed by the fellow.

Compensation for the fellow is $3500 for the eight-week program. Housing will be the responsibility of the fellow.
